About ViewMyStreet

ViewMyStreet is a free Google Street View explorer with twenty written city guides and five curated collections. There is no signup, no account and no daily limit.

What it does

It puts a map and a Street View panel side by side, lets you search any address in the world, and gives you a link that reopens the exact view including the direction the camera was facing. There are four ways in: the main explorer, a split screen, a satellite view and a random teleport.

Places you look at are remembered and places you save are kept, both in your own browser rather than in an account. Nothing you do here is transmitted to us or stored on a server.

Why it is free

The largest site in this category caps you at twenty searches a day and then asks for a subscription. That is a strange thing to charge for, given the imagery is Google's and the tool is a thin layer over their API.

This site is supported by advertising on the written pages instead. There are no ads inside the map, the Street View panel or any of the tools, because an advert over a map is a worse product and everybody knows it.

The written half

Every competing Street View site is a search box and nothing else. That is fine if you already know the address you want and useless if what you actually want is somewhere interesting to look at.

So half of this site is writing: twenty city guides, five themed collections, and guides to using the tool properly. Each city guide has ten one-click spots, five streets worth following end to end, and several hundred words on what makes that particular place worth exploring from the pavement rather than from a photograph.

The guides are also honest about gaps. Montmartre is patchy because several of its best routes are staircases. The Hollywood Sign cannot be reached by road. Saying so is more useful than pretending coverage is uniform.

What it is not

It is not a Google product and it is not affiliated with Google in any way. The maps, the imagery and the Street View service are Google's, and this site is an interface to them built on their public API.

It does not store, cache or re-serve any Google imagery. Everything you see is loaded live from Google's servers into your browser, which is both a requirement of their terms and the only sensible way to build this.
