Street View France

France has some of the most complete rural Street View coverage anywhere. The road network is dense, the cars have been back repeatedly, and a very large number of small roads were driven that would be blank in a bigger country.

City guides

1 written guide for France, each with the streets worth walking and the views worth opening.

What the coverage is like

Almost every commune has something. France has 34,000 of them, and the density of coverage is closer to complete than in any comparably sized country.

Most places have been photographed several times since 2008, so the imagery is generally recent and the history slider often has real depth.

Mountain passes are seasonal. A col shot in July looks nothing like the same road in the archive from another year, and some high passes were only ever driven once.

Worth opening beyond the city guides

The Gorges du Verdon, where the road runs along the rim of a canyon 700 metres deep.

The D-Day beaches, where the imagery covers both the coast road and the surviving bunkers at Longues-sur-Mer and Pointe du Hoc.

The Route des Grandes Alpes, a linked chain of passes from Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, driven in full.

The bastide towns of the south-west, which are medieval new towns laid out on a grid three centuries before anyone else was doing that.

Questions about Street View in France

Can I see my street in France on Street View?

Almost certainly. French coverage extends to very small roads in very small communes, more completely than in most countries. Type the address into the search box and the view opens on it.

How current is French Street View imagery?

Generally recent in populated areas, because the cars have returned several times since 2008. High mountain roads are the exception and may have been driven only once, in summer.
