Hidden Gems in Street View

Ten places that are strange, remote or simply unlikely to be photographed at all.

The interesting edge of Street View is not the landmarks. It is the places somebody walked a camera into for no obvious commercial reason: an abandoned town, an island with almost nobody on it, a road across a salt flat where the horizon disappears.

Several of these were captured by trekker rather than by car, which is why they exist at all. A backpack camera can go where a vehicle cannot, and the difference between a road-level capture and a walked one is very obvious once you have seen both.

None of these needs a booking, a permit or a flight, which is the entire argument for exploring this way. They are also the places most likely to have gaps in coverage, so expect to find the path simply stopping now and then.
